TYPE: Escavada Black-on-White

DATE: AD 1050 to 1150 (Oppelt 2008,13)

BOWL DESIGN PLACEMENT: Primary designs on interiors, rarely secondary exterior designs.

COMMON DESIGNS: Thick lines, usually painted in a triangular style, such as triangular scrolls or negative "lighting bolts", and solid triangles or barbs that often appear interlocked. No hatching. No scrolls.

KEY DIFFERENCES: Escavada style is of thick lines and solids - usually barbs and very triangular designs. Snowflake is of thick lines and solids - usually keys and lines usually meet at right angles, usually very rectilinear designs. Red Mesa solid designs can be Holbrook style (Little Colorado Whiteware), or "anything" solid and thick line that is not Escavada or Snowflake. Red Mesa may have hatched elements unlike Escavada or Snowflake.

White Mountain Redware: Puerco Black-on-Red

Tusayan Whiteware: Sosi Black-on-White (vegetal paint, "light paste")

Mesa Verde Whiteware: Mancos Black-on-White (mostly mineral, some vegetal paint)

Little Colorado Whiteware: Holbrook B (vegetal paint, "dark paste")

Comments: The only other unique style made up entirely of thick lines and solids in Cibola Whiteware is Snowflake Black-on-White.
