TYPE: Heshota Polychrome

(AKA: Heshotauthla Polychrome)

DATE: A.D. 1300 to 1400  (Lanmon & Harlow, 2008;62)

BOWL DESIGN PLACEMENT: Primary interior designs, occasionally secondary exterior designs that may be done in glaze, white, or glaze and white.

COMMON DESIGNS: Early examples have designs similar to Pinedale Polychrome and Cedar Creek Polychrome, while later examples are often more simple, yet stylistic, and have more open space in or below the primary designs. Early and middle period examples usually have primary designs along the inner wall of bowls, later examples may have designs that focus on the center of bowl interiors.

KEY DIFFERENCES:  Thick, often runny glaze paint. Red to orange slipped interiors and exteriors. Early examples have designs similar to Pinedale Polychrome with the only difference being the thick glaze paint. Pinedale Polychrome is often glazy, however it usually will not be as thick or runny as most Heshota Polychrome. Middle and late Heshota Polychrome usuallly have more open space in the designs compared to earlier White Mountain Redware Pinedale and Cedar Creek styles.

1Y Heshota Polychrome bowl.  The interior has thick glaze paint that bled - giving it a pinkish hue. The design closely resembles St. Johns Polychrome of White Mountain Redware

which this type is derived from.

Approximate Dimensions: 4 1/8" or 10.5 cm. by 2 1/4" or 5.5 cm.

2N Anasazi Heshota Polychrome bowl painted in a Pinedale Style.

The glaze paint on this bowl, in different places, looked like different

colors - green, midnight blue, and black.

3Y Anasazi Heshota Polychrome bowl painted in a Cedar Creek Style.

Approximate Dimensions: 7 3/4" or 19.7 cm. by 4" or 10.2 cm.

4Y This late example of Anasazi Heshota Polychrome has an exterior design with no interior design, which is unusual. The exterior design is like that of later Pinnawa types and not like the earlier Pinedale or Tularosa styles of White Mountain Redware.  There is a small area near the rim that was missed when the potter painted or slipped the interior red.

Approximate Dimensions: 11 1/4" or 28.6 cm. by 5 1/8" or 13 cm.
