TYPE: Huerigos Polychrome

DATE:  A.D. 1250 to 1660 (Rakita and Raymond, 2003;160)

COMMON BACKGROUND COLOR(S): Interiors white, exteriors orange to tan to reddish brown.

KEY DIFFERENCES: Bowl interiors have black designs on a white slip, exteriors are either black-on-orange, or red and black-on-orange. The black is often glazed and will feel rough due to the added glazing mineral. Jars have black and red designs painted on an all white slip (sometimes the bottom is left unslipped). Sometimes the black paint is not glazed, however it is usually thick and not polished over. Villa Ahumada Polychrome often has shiny black paint due to having been polished over, however it usually will not appear thick or feel rough like the black paint of Huerigos Polychrome.

Exterior black-on-orange.
