TYPE: Papago Red

DATE: A.D. -1700 to Present (Fontana et al., 1962;103,104,109)

KEY DIFFERENCES: Period 1 Redware (A.D. -1700 to 1860) rim coils occur on both variants. Variants are described as Variant #1) thin slipped with sand temper, Variant #2) organic temper resulting in a black clay body and usually has thicker walls. Variant #1 is more common in Period 1 (A.D. -1700 to 1860) whereas Variant #2 is more common in Period 2 (A.D. 1860 to 1930).

SLIP OR SURFACE TREATMENT: Red slipped.

TEMPER: Period 1 (A.D. -1700 to 1860) temper can be sand (a light to dark gray carbon core may be present), sometimes highly micaceous, rarely organic. During Period 2  (A.D. 1860 to 1930), and Period 3 (A.D. 1930 to Present) temper is commonly organic and will look dark to light black through out the paste. Mica and sand temper may occur as well (usually on later examples).

FORMS: Unsmoothed rim coils present on jars and bowls, rims can be straight or everted. It is believed that vessels with unsmoothed coiled rims date from A.D. -1700 to 1900. Effigys and eccentric vessels became more common after 1880 when the railroad brought more and more tourists to the potters.

THICKNESS: Thickness of the walls of vessels were generally thin  (about 1/8" to 3/16") in Period 1, thick (1/4" or more) in Period 2 (although many tourists pots made from 1880 and later were often thin), Period 3 vessels that were used by the natives were often thick while the tourist pots were usually thinner.

COMMENTS: Period 1 (-1700 to 1860) Papago redware can be difficult to separate from prehistoric Hohokam redware as it is thinner than Period 2 (A.D. 1860 to 1930). Period 2 redware is usually thicker and had organic temper as well.
