TYPE: Pinedale Polychrome

DATE: A.D. 1275 to 1325 (Carlson, 1970;53)

BOWL DESIGN PLACEMENT: Primary interior designs, secondary exterior designs common.

COMMON DESIGNS: Pinedale Black-on-Red interior designs, occasionally with white outlining the black. Exterior designs often in unit motifs painted in black outlined with white.  Many designs are in a banded design along the inner wall (like earlier types), however middle and late period examples not as tightly compact as in earlier St. Johns style.  Some designs cover the entire field, instead of focusing on just the inner wall. Often bowls have a thick banding line immediately below the interior design. Some bowls and many jars have thick banding lines immediately above and below the primary design.

KEY DIFFERENCES: Exteriors of bowls usually have unit motifs painted in black, outlined with white. Interior designs are not as tightly compact, and often have broad black lines and/or bands.

VARIETIES: Bowls:

Black-on-Red interior, Black outlined in White on Red exterior.

Black outlined in White on Red interior and exterior.

Black outlined in White on Red interior, Black-on-Red exterior.

  

 

 

  

 

  

1N Pinedale Polychrome bowls are most often decorated in the manner as the one pictured above; with black-on-red interiors and black outlined in white unit motifs on exteriors. This bowl also has a thick banding line immediately below the interior design.

  

 

  

2Y Pinedale Polychrome bowl with white outlining the black designs on the interior as well as the exterior. This bowl has three (somewhat equally spaced) stylized human hand prints, or bear tracks on the exterior.

Approximate Dimensions: 8 7/8" or 22.5 cm. by 3 7/8" or 10 cm.

5N Pinedale Polychrome Jar.

This jar has an unusual "spirit-break" in the bottom white zigzag line that can be viewed as a sun or star design when looking at the vessels bottom.
