TYPE: Playas Red-on-Brown

DATE:  A.D. 700 to 1660 (Rakita and Raymond, 2003;160)

FORMS: Jars, Marriage Vessels, Effigies.

COMMON DESIGNS: Red slipped bottoms with textured patterned necks that are not slipped are most common. Another variety will have only about an inch wide red slipped horizontal band around the widest diameter of jars usually with textured patterned necks, the necks and bottoms are not slipped, however the interior rim and top usually is.

KEY DIFFERENCES: Red slip on brown ware (bichrome).

COMMENTS: This type has not been formally recognized (new type).

VARIETIES:

1) Red slipped bottom with a textured neck

(the textured neck come in all varieties seen in Playas Red).

2) Red slipped horizontal band usually at the widest

diameter of a jar with a textured neck.

3) Corrilitos Variety has the midway horizontal band and the neck has areas that are red slipped and areas that are incised usually in a pattern.

4) Effigy applique that is red slipped.
